Happy Birthday

Yesterday was my birthday and I was blown away by how many people sent me birthday wishes on social media. Another conversation also got me to thinking of the power of social media.

A lot is said about how dangerous social media can be, and I’ve seen that for myself. Cyber bullying is a real issue and it’s something I think we should all take responsibility for. If we stand by and let someone be cyber bullied without comment, how is that different than standing around in a  school yard and watching someone be beaten?

However, I don’t want to talk about the bad side of social media today. I want to talk about the good side. Yesterday wasn’t the best day I’ve ever had and those comments on social media, coming in a steady stream through the day made me feel on top of the world. Okay, so facebook reminds us when it’s someone’s birthday and we just click and type “Happy Birthday” and that’s it. Easy. But in this busy world where scan reading and filtering is top of the list of priorities that couple of seconds is precious and I value them greatly.

Thank you to everyone who thought of me, even if only for a moment.

I’ve made a promise to myself that I will never miss a facebook reminded birthday again. I will never look at the person’s name and think – well I don’t know them that well, they won’t even know me anyway. I will ALWAYS send that little wish, that few seconds of thinking about them.

Another wonderful thing about social media is the opportunity to make friends with people I would never otherwise have met. People who live so far away our lives would never have touched. Some of the people I’ve met through social media, principally Facebook and Twitter have become so much more than friends. My life is richer for having known them.

As someone who doesn’t go out often, for many different reasons, and doesn’t get a great deal of social interaction outside my home, facebook has become a valuable lifeline to the world. I chat to friends, am notified of family events, peep into the lives of people from all over the world and am lifted by rainbows, kittens and inspirational words.

Sure there are rants. My timeline is not immune to ignorance and anger, and I’m capable of it myself sometimes. However, I am beyond fortunate in the friends I’ve made. Every one of them is awesome and so what if they have the occasional slip into ignorance, prejudice or just plain dickishness, I still love them.

So many people I’ve never met. Some who don’t even know I exist but all our lives touch, bumping against each other like bubbles in a stream, and I love it. The more bubbles the better.

In conclusion, I say to all my friends, old and new, those I’ve met and those I never will, those who know me and those who’ve never spoken to me, those who love and hate me, those who don’t even know I exist – THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART.

Much love from my bubble to yours

Beautifully put! You’re right, you’re completely right. It’s easy to dwell on the negative side, but there’s a lot of positive things about social media. Take Rainbow Snippets and how it’s brought us all together. I’m glad, too, we’ve got something that brings us all together, even though we’re in different parts of the world.
